Managing Generational Differences

March 23, 2011, 9:00am-Noon

Kotzen Room (1st Floor, Lefavour Building), Simmons College

Presented by: Rachel Reiser, Generationally Speaking, Babson College

The Millennial Generation is comprised of individuals born between 1982-2002 -- the oldest of them having hit the workplace. In an interactive discussion, this program will give an overview of the Millennial generation, discuss experiential factors that impact their outlook for work environs and the associated highlights and hurdles these present, as well as consider key "lessons learned" for organizations on various issues.

About the Speaker: Currently serving as Associate Dean for Academic Services at Babson College in Wellesley, MA, Rachel Reiser is the founder and principle of Generationally Speaking, which provides consultation to companies and other organizations in helping them to consider their work in the age of Millennial Generation. In a 20-year career in higher education, Rachel's spark for a professional interest in generational studies stems from her first-hand experience with the changing characteristics of today's late adolescent. Her book, "Millennials on Board: The Impact of the Rising Generation on the Workplace," was released in February 2010. Ms. Reiser is a 2006 recipient of the Massachusetts Association for Women in Education Award for Professional Excellence. Rachel can be reached at rreiser@genspeaks.com and rreiser@babson.edu.

Teaching and Learning Collaborative,(TLC)

The Colleges of the Fenway’s Teaching and Learning Collaborative (TLC), supports and builds on faculty development programs offered by the individual colleges of the six-college consortium and develops new, effective, and innovative opportunities for collaborative faculty development for them.  The goals of the TLC are to: 1) enhance faculty teaching through shared professional development experiences; 2) share expertise to strengthen programs on individual campuses; 3) facilitate support networks across and within institutions; and 4) increase collaborative academic programs and research.

While the content focus of specific initiatives and events varies, all TLC offerings are developed and delivered collaboratively; emphasize the relationship between learning, teaching and scholarship/creative production; result in the implementation of action plans; and encourage small communities of practice and research in areas of faculty interest.  Annual events of the TLC include the Summer Teaching Institute, the Fall New Faculty Reception, the Annual Teaching and Learning Conference, and the Spring Faculty Reception.  A four-course certificate program for Teaching College Effectively with Technology was initiated in summer, 2011.

The grant that funds the TLC was received from the Davis Educatitonal Foundation established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis's retirement as chairman of Shaw's Supermarket, Inc.
